A dedicated IP address is a unique internet protocol (IP) address solely for your websites and hosting account. It has many different uses—such as allowing you to access your website when the DNS is not setup, providing increased speed when the traffic load is high, and bringing increased security.
As you might have guessed, a shared IP address is an IP address shared by multiple websites. The IP address is assigned to the server and domains are pointed to their specific website directory using DNS. There is generally nothing wrong with using a shared IP address, however some instances do require a dedicated IP address.
A dedicated IP address certainly has its benefits, but simply isn’t needed for most hosting scenarios. Whether you should get one depends on your needs and website requirements. If you are unsure, give us a call and we can help you make the decision.
